Program Overview

UnderWater Film (Dive-Media) Certificate is designed to provide exclusive learning environment in progressive

manner for inexperienced, novice and experienced scuba divers. The SAE Institute dive lecturers

are highly qualified and active in the industry, with extensive experience in diving as scuba

instructors and underwater cinematographers. The course will allow students to build up their

underwater buoyancy/propulsion skills, gain PADI or NAUI scuba divers certificates, produce

high quality video material and be comfortable in pre-production, production and post-

production modes. Other than being a cinematographer that shoots a movie on land, this course

would let you to dive and shoot underwater documentaries.

SAE Curacao UnderWater Film (Dive-Media) Certificate

 will have 3 different course directions for the participants, which

will decide the length and structure of the studies:

•     No prior experience in Diving and Film

•     No Dive experience/ demonstrable Film experience

•     Demonstrable Dive Experience/ No Film experience

Entry requirements

There are no academic requirements or pre-requisites to participate in this program. However, to receive exclusions from some parts of the program the applicants will need to send SAE Curacao the proof of their film certificates/diplomas and/or diving certifications with a copy of their dive log book. Applicants should be at least 16 years of age upon commencement of the course, have basic knowledge of English language and computer operations. 

*For delegates who are are 14 or 15 years old and wish to join our short courses a special consideration process from management is required.

Course Contents
  • •     Scuba Diving Certification by PADI or NAUI 

    Learn Scuba basics and gain Open Water Certificate with our experienced
    instructors on board. Start from theoretical part, mixed with Confined Water
    Skills in the swimming pool and head over to the Open Water dive sequence in
    the ocean of Curacao to master the knowledge in practice. Receive worldwide
    acknowledged PADI and NAUI certification that allows divers to go diving at any
    dive center around the world, rent and purchase scuba gear, dive to maximum
    depth of 18-20 meters and film underwater documentaries.

    •     Advanced buoyancy skills

    The key element in underwater cinematography is perfect buoyancy, that lets you
    handle the equipment efficiently, monitor the environment; do not harm flora and
    fauna. This set of professional skills is a must to even experienced divers, because
    there is always a room to improve.

    •     Cinematography 

    Camera imaging devices, video resolution, light levels, camera mounts, 
    waterproof housing systems, status indicators & other camera controls, white
    balancing, color balancing multiple cameras, color types, panning, tilting,
    zooming, lenses, aperture, f/stops, focal length, depth of field, shot types and
    sizes, framing faces, movement, analog video formats, professional formats.

    •     Pre-production

    Production costs, production budgets, renting vs. buying, gear selection,
    contributing costs, managing production schedules, cost per minute/cost per
    viewer, estimating costs. Basics (grammar, structure, etc.), different script styles,
    dialogue, managing information overload, video grammar, script writing terms,
    abbreviations and basics of storyboarding.

    •     Production

    One of the hardest modes in cinematography is Production. Responsibility-
    handling the crew, cast, location and follow the schedule in the main industry cost
    a quite a lot of money. SAE Curacao will be giving full hands on the process and
    give tips on how to improve your production to its best possible. 

    •     Editing 

    Linear vs. non-linear editing, dedicated software-based editing, linear editing
    systems, ‘insert and assemble’ editing, using time-code, drop frame time code.

    •     Audio Post

    We teach cinematographers to appreciate the sound design, because it is crucial to
    the result of the final product package and have to be done on the high level. This
    module covers a number of key topics, including sound for film, synchronization,
    on-line and off-line sound editing, Foley techniques, additional dialogue
    replacement (ADR), basic sound design, video signal flow and basic video

    •     WEB Development 

    Learn to create your own on-line portfolio and be up to date with the main
    industry; share your works and latest news with the followers. Basic knowledge
    of the web development.

    •     Fluorescent Night Dive / Glow Dive 

    Using specially designed blue lights and lens filters for dive masks and camera
    lenses that reveal the natural fluorescence of corals and other marine life. It’s the
    sort of thing you have to see to believe, an oceanic underworld transformed into
    something that look like it came right out of the movie Avatar.
